Modbus now available on range of compact thermal mass air/gas flow meters Envirotech Online

Process engineers who need to communicate flow measurement information over Modbus about air or gases flowing in line sizes from 0.25 to 24 inches (6 to 610 mm) will find the newly extended lines of ST51A and ST75A flow meters from Fluid Components International (FCI) provide the solution in a highly accurate, rugged, and compact instrument. The new Modbus option for the ST51A and ST75A flow meters represents FCI’s continued commitment to providing optimal thermal mass flow meter design and value.  They combine highly dependable surface-mount, lead-free RoHS compliant electronics with highly accurate, repeatable all-welded, equal-mass flow sensors.   Their no-moving parts design is virtually maintenance free and offers an exceptionally long life. FCI’s ST51A and ST75A flow meters’ Modbus option meets the EIA/TIA-485 standard and provides mass flow rate, totalised flow, and temperature data. Transmission mode is via RTU or ASCII with standard MS (16 bit), standard LS (16 bit) or Daniel extensions (32 bit).  They’re ideal for use with single function PLCs, pilot plant projects or large SCADA systems or complex plant DCS systems. In addition to Modbus, the ST51A and ST75A also prov...

You’ve probably heard of CNC, but did you know that it’s not only for milling? Laser

You’ve probably heard of CNC, but did you know that it’s not only for milling? Laser engravers, 3D printers, and standard household paper printers all use CNC methods. As the term suggests, computer numerical control (CNC) is a way to control a machine using a computer to translate numerical data. A CNC can be as simple as a household inkjet or a basic 3D printer, but it can also scale to much more advanced systems of complete manufacturing and assembly. CNC systems have revolutionized the production of goods and made it possible to have many of today’s conveniences. Before the development of CNC, lathes, mills, wood carving, and other processes were all controlled by an operator or technician. Operators would use simple machines such as levers, hand tools, or lead-screw spindles to control the lathes or mills and modify the workpiece to a final product. Many of these early machines were specifically built to do that one task on the workpiece and required large setups and investments.  One of the key promises with computer technology is to create accuracy, reproducibility, and flexibility through software. Computers allow simple tasks to take less time and scale to b...

Yes, you can still visit Bob Dole’s 1996 campaign website. Here is its story.

Welcome to Dial Up, Mashable’s most excellent look at technology in the ’90s, from the early days of the World Wide Web to the clunky gadgets that won our hearts.  It’s Oct. 6, 1996. The night of the first presidential debate between President Bill Clinton and the Republican nominee, Bob Dole. Clinton is the young, popular incumbent who played the saxophone on The Arsenio Hall Show. Dole is a stiff conservative, who at 73 years old looks like he yells at kids to get off his lawn. But as the debate ends, right after he warns young people against doing drugs, Dole pulls off a first for a presidential candidate in the new internet era: he drops the URL of his campaign website, www.dolekemp96.org, on national TV. Now, 23 years later, you can still experience the website at the original URL in all its 1996 glory.  To find more, I reached out to designer Rob Kubasko, the man hired to create Dole’s website, and Mike Dec, the man who set out to preserve it.  In the mid-’90s, Kubasko was working as a graphic designer at Arizona State University when he hooked up with the Dole campaign through a mutual connection. “I had been interested in politics for some time and one of my ...
