Today’s Question of the Day is remarkably simple, but it took a reader suggestion to make it appear. TTAC is not short of opinions about cars. I would like to see each submitted state the car or truck, SUV, etc he or she owns or leases. Here’s a start for me: own a 2010 model Prius V and a 2014 Audi Q5. Electric bicycle hub motors vs mid-drive motors: Which should be on your next e-bike?

Electric bicycles are becoming increasingly popular forms of two-wheeled electric transportation for both commuting and pleasure riding. The two most common electric motor styles used in today’s electric bicycles are hub motors and mid-drive motors. Which one is best for your needs? Read on to learn more and find out! (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Hub motors, which place the electric motor in the center of a bicycle wheel, are certainly the most common form of electric bicycle motors. Mid-drive motors, which house the motor closer to the center of the bicycle and transfer the motor’s power to the rear wheel via the bicycle’s chain drive, have become much more common over the last 2-3 years, and are cutting significantly into the hub motor’s lead as the king of the e-bike motors. Both have a number of unique advantages and disadvantages, so choosing the right motor for you will largely depend on your requirements and which advantages seem more useful to your needs. One of the biggest advantages of hub motors is that they require little or no maintenance. They are an entirely independent drive system that retain all of their components inside the motor casing,...

The Devolo Magic 2 WiFi series are the best power line adapters money can buy, offering

The Devolo Magic 2 WiFi series are the best power line adapters money can buy, offering fast speeds, Mesh Wi-Fi and new technology – but they come at a price. Devolo Magic 2 WiFi is the latest series of adapters from the German company that allow you to use your home’s power lines to transmit network data. These handy devices are particularly useful in large buildings with thick walls, where Wi-Fi can struggle to get through. The idea is that a power line network gives you the stability of wired networking without the need to trail network cables throughout your home. While in the past power line speeds couldn’t quite match those of Ethernet cables, improvements to the HomePlug power line standard – the technology that transmits network data over power lines – have gradually upped the speeds to be more comparable to wired networking, and faster than Wi-Fi. body .hawk-widget{width:100%;letter-spacing:normal;}._hawk.subtitle~.hawk-widget[data-widget-type=price]{margin:16px 0;}@media (min-width:600px){._hawk.subtitle~.hawk-widget[data-widget-type=price]{margin:0;min-height:128px;float:right;clear:none;width:50%;}.fancy_box_body ._hawk.subtitle~.hawk-widget[data-widget-type=pr...

Subscribe to the all-new Rolling Stone! Everything you need to know from the authority on music, entertainment, politics and pop culture. Timeless classics and shameless one-hit wonders from a year when nothing made any damn sense (in the best possible way) Man, it was a hot one. 1999 was the year music exploded, the year when nothing made any damn sense, the year fans had to throw out any old-school rules for how pop worked. The radio was suddenly full of shiny new stars. So many timeless classics. So many shameless one-hit wonders. So much crazed innovation, all around the margins. Teen-pop happened. Nu-metal happened. Every genre was booming. Let’s put it this way: If you spend an hour at your local karaoke bar, you’re going to hear somebody belt at least one hit from the summer of ’99. It was one of those pop moments when all that glitters actually is gold. So let’s break it down: the 99 best songs of 1999, 20 years later. The hits, the flops, the flukes, the obscurities. Whatever type of music you loved, this year had it: hip-hop, electronica, indie rock, punk garage, country, R&B, disco sleaze. The old stylistic boundaries didn’t hold any more. “The walls came down,” a...

State to ban single-use plastic bags beginning in 2021

The Delaware Senate on June 6 passed House Bill 130, which will ban single-use plastic bags in Delaware beginning on Jan. 1, 2021. The vote followed passage of the bill in the House on May 14. The bill was set to become law upon being signed by Gov. John Carney, who praised its final passage on June 6. “Plastic bags are a significant source of litter in our state,” Carney said. “Many get stuck in trees or discarded on the side of the road. We know that very few plastic bags are recycled and many end up as litter in our communities. I look forward to signing this legislation, which will help clean up our state and give us another tool to protect our environment. Thank you to the sponsor of this legislation, Rep. Brady, and members of the Delaware House and Senate for their partnership on this issue.” The House vote was 33-7, with one legislator absent. All of the seven representatives voting against the bill were Republicans, while eight Republicans, including state Rep. Ron Gray (R-38th), voted in favor of the bill. In the Senate, the vote was 13-8, with six Republican senators voting against the bill, including state Sen. Gerald Hocker Sr. (R-20th), who owns several local store...

How to Brighten Up Your Sad Kitchen Lighting, According to Interior Designers

In most homes, the kitchen isn’t just where you cook, but where you eat, read the paper in the morning, and hang out — and each of those different tasks requires different types of light. So even though it’s nice to have bright light when you’re prepping ingredients on the counter or cooking on the stove, those same lights can feel garish when you’re serving a meal or entertaining friends and family. “A modern kitchen requires the ability to shift light levels between efficient workspace and a romantic place of gathering for nourishment,” explains Robin Standefer, co-founder, and principal at Roman and Williams, and that requires a bit of creative thinking and intelligent design. To help find the balance between beautiful kitchen lighting and kitchen light fixtures that are actually practical, we asked four interior and lighting designers to share their favorite kitchen lighting idea, from the most labor-intensive to the easiest. The quickest and easiest way to improve your kitchen lighting is to swap out your light bulbs. “I cannot advocate enough how important the quality of light is in a kitchen,” emphasizes Noele de Leon, senior lighting designer at WeWork. And since kitchen...

Back in the old days, when we were still twiddling bits with magnetized needles, changing the data on an EPROM wasn’t as simple as shoving it in a programmer. These memory chips were erased with UV light shining through a quartz window onto a silicon die. At the time, there were neat little blacklights in a box sold to erase these chips. There’s little need for these chip erasers now, so how do you erase and program a chip these days? Build your own chip eraser using components that would have blown minds back in the 70s. [Charles] got his hands on an old 2764 EPROM for a project, but this chip had a problem — there was still data on it. Fortunately, old electronics are highly resistant to abuse, so he pulled out the obvious equipment to erase this chip, a 300 watt tanning lamp. This almost burnt down the house, and after a second round of erasing of six hours under the lamp, there were still unerased bits. Our ability to generate UV light has improved dramatically over the last fifty years, and [Charles] remembered he had an assortment of LEDs, including a few tiny 5mW UV LEDs. Can five milliwatts do what three hundred watts couldn’t? Yes; the LED had the right frequency to fli...
